Thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi

  1

The sincere and deep desire of the heart is always realized; in my own life I have always verified the sure of this.

2

I believe to be able to affirm, without arrogance and with proper humility, that my message and my methods are valid, in its essence, for the whole world.

3

I think that certain method through of my incoherencies. I believe that it has coherence that it passes for all my incoherencies as well as it has in the nature a unit that shows the apparent diversities.

4

The diseases are not only the result of our acts as also of our thoughts.

5

Satyagraha - the force of the spirit - does not depend on the number; it depends on the firmness degree.

6

Satyagraha and Ahimsa are as two faces of the same medal, or better, as the two faces of a small smooth metal disc and without incisions. Who will be able to say which one is the correct? The no-violence is the way. The Truth, the end.

7

My life is one indivisible Whole, and all my acts converge in others ones; all of them are born in the insatiately love which I have with all the humanity.

8

A thing launched deep roots in me: the certainty of that the moral is the basis of the things, and the truth, the substance of any moral. The truth became my only objective. It won importance for each day. And also my definition of it was constantly extending.

9

My devotion to the truth pushed me for the politics; and I can say, without the low hesitation, and also with all the humility that, they don't understand anything of religion those that affirm that her nothing has to do with the politics.

10

My concern is not in being coherent with my previous statements on certain problem, but in being coherent with the truth.

11

The mistake doesn't become true for to diffuse and to multiply easily. In the same way the truth doesn't become mistake for the f action of anybody to see.

12

The love is the most abstract force, and also the most potent, that there is in the world.

13

The Love and the truth are so united amongst themselves that it is practically impossible to separate them. They are as two faces of the same medal.

14

The ahimsa (love) it is not only a negative state that consists of not doing the evil, but also a positive state that he/she consists of loving, in doing the good to all, besides to who does the evil.

15

The ahimsa is not such easy thing. It is easier to dance on a rope that on the thread of the ahimsa.

16

We can only win the opponent with the love, never with the hate.

17

The only way to punish who one love is to suffer in his/her place.

18

It is the suffering, and only the suffering, that opens in the man the interior understanding.

19

To unite the firmest resistance to the evil with the largest benevolence to the malefactor. Other way doesn't exist of purifying the world.

20

My natural inclination to take care of the patients became passion little by little; the such point that a lot of times were forced to neglect my work. . .

21

The no-violence is the highest prayer quality. The wealth is not able to get-went, the cholera flees of her, the pride devours her, the gluttony and the lust obscure her, the lie she empties, the whole pressure no justified it commits her.

22

No-violence doesn't mean renouncement to every fight form against the badly. On the contrary. The no-violence, at least like me I conceive her, it is a fight still more active and real that the own law of the talião - but in moral plan.

23

The no-violence cannot be defined as a method passive or inactive. It is a movement much more assets than others and it demands the use of the weapons. The truth and the no-violence are, maybe, the most active forces than the world disposes.

24

To become true force, the no-violence he/she should be born of the spirit.

25

I believe that the no-violence is infinitely superior to the violence, and that the pardon is much more virile than the punishment...

26

The no-violence, in his/her dynamic conception, means conscious suffering. He/she doesn't want absolutely to say comfortable humble submission of the malefactor, but a pledge, with the whole vitality, against the tyrant. Like this only one individual, tends as base this law, it can challenge the powers of an unjust empire to save the own honor, the own religion, the own soul and to advance the premises for the fall and the regeneration of that same empire.

27

The method of the no-violence can seem slow, very slow, but I am convinced that it is the fastest.

28

After half century of experience, I know that the humanity cannot be freed except by the no-violence. If well I understood, it is this the central lesson of the Christianity.

29

It is only acquired perfect health living in the obedience to the laws of the Nature. The true happiness is impossible without true health, and the true health is impossible without rigorous control of the gluttony. All the other senses will be automatically subjects to it controls when the gluttony is under control. That that dominates the own senses conquered the whole world and he/she became leaves harmonious of the nature.

30

The civilization, in the real sense of the word, doesn't consist of the multiplication, but in the will of spontaneous limitation of the needs. Only that spontaneous limitation carts the happiness and the true satisfaction. And it increases the capacity to serve.

31

It is unjust and immoral to try to flee to the consequences of the own actions. It is fair that the person that eats in surplus feels bad or fast. It is unjust that who gives in to the own appetites flees to the consequences taking tonic or other medicines. It is still more unjust than a person gives in to the own animalistic passions and flee to the consequences of the own actions.

The Nature is relentless, and he/she will take revenge completely of a such violation of their laws.

32

I learned, thanks to a bitter experience, the supreme only lesson: to control the anger. And in the same way that the conserved heat if it transforms in energy, like this our controlled anger can become a function capable to move the world. It is not that I don't anger me or lose the control. The one that I don't give is field to the anger. I cultivate the patience and the meekness and, in a general way, I get. But when the anger I assault, I limit myself to control her. How do I get? It is a habit that each one should acquire and to cultivate with an assiduous practice.

33

The silence already if it turned for me a spiritual physical need. Initially I chose him/it to relieve me of the depression. To proceed I needed time to write. After having practiced him/it for certain time I discovered, though, his/her spiritual value. It is suddenly gave bill that you/they were those moments in that best could communicate with God. Now I feel as if it had been done for the silence.

34

Those that have a great self-control, or that you/they are totally absorbed in the work, they speak a little. Word and action committees don't walk well. Repair in the nature: he/she works continually, but in silence.

35

That that is not capable to govern himself, won't be capable to govern the other ones.

36

Who knows to concentrate in a thing and to insist on her as only objective, obtains, to the cable, the capacity to do any thing.

37

The true education consists of to put the discovered or to do to update a person's best. What better book than the humanity's book?

38

I don't want my house to be surrounded by walls from everywhere and that my windows are covered. I want the cultures of all of the people to walk for my house with the maximum of possible freedom.

39

Anything more far away from my thought that the idea of to close and to raise barriers. But I affirm, with every respect, that the esteem for the other cultures can conveniently to proceed, and never to precede, the esteem and the assimilation of ours. (...) An academic learning, not based on the practice, it is as an embalmed corpse, maybe to be seen, but that doesn't inspire nor it ennobles anything. My religion forbid me of to decrease or to despise the other cultures, and it insists, under penalty of civil suicide, in the need to assimilate and to live the life.

40

To read and to write, of per itself, they are not education. I would begin the child's education, therefore, teaching him/her an useful manual work, and putting her/it in degree of producing since the moment in that it begins his/her education. He/she gave way all of the schools could become self-sufficient, with the condition of the State to buy the manufactured ones.

I believe that a such educational system had allowed the highest development of the mind and of the soul. It is necessary, however, that the work manual is not just taught mechanically, as it is done today, but scientifically, that is, the child should know the reason and him/it as of each operation.

The eyes, the ears and the language come before the hand. To read comes before to write and to draw before drawing the letters of the alphabet.

If we follow this method, the children's understanding will have opportunity to develop better than when it is braked beginning the instruction for the alphabet.

41

I hate the privilege and the monopoly. For me, everything that it cannot be divided with the crowds it is "taboo."

42

The civil disobedience is an intrinsic right of the citizen. Don't dare to resign, one don't want to leave of being man. The civil disobedience is never followed by the anarchy. Only the criminal disobedience with the force. To repress the civil disobedience is to try to imprison the conscience.

43

All that that possesses things that he/she doesn't need is a thief.

44

Who looks for the truth, who obeys the law of the love, it cannot be concerned with the tomorrow.

45

The opinion divergences should not mean hostility. If it went like this, my wife and I should be enemy. I don't know two people in the world that you/they have not had opinion divergences. As follower of Gita (Bhagavad Gita), I always tried to nurture for the that disagree of me the same affection that I nurture for the that are me dearer and neighbors.

46

I will continue admitting the committed mistakes. The only tyrant that I accept in this world is the "silent and small voice" inside of me. Although he/she has to face the perspective of forming minority of only one, I believe lowly that I have courage of meeting in such a desperate minority.

47

In the subjects of conscience the law of most doesn't count.

48

I am firmly convinced that he/she only gets lost the freedom for fault of the own weakness.

49

I believe in the man's essential unit, and, therefore in the unit of everything that lives. Consequently, if a man progresses spiritually, the whole world progresses with him, and if a man falls, the whole world falls in measured equal.

50

My mission doesn't become exhausted in the fraternity among the Indians. My mission is not simply in the liberation of India, although she absorbs, in practice, all my life and all my time. Through the liberation of India I hope to act and to develop the mission of the men's fraternity.

My patriotism is not exclusive. Everything includes. I would reject the patriotism to seek support in the poverty or in the exploration of other nations. The patriotism that I become pregnant is not worth anything if he/she doesn't reconcile always, without exceptions, with the largest well and all the humanity's peace.

51

The woman should stop considering the object of the man's concupiscence. The medicine is in their more hands than in the man's hands.

52

A life without religion is as a boat without rudder.

53

The faith-a sixth sense-it transcends the intellect without contradicting him.

54

My faith, in the dense darkness, shines more he/she lives.

55

We can only feel god standing out of the senses.

56

The one that I want to reach, the ideal that I always longed for with keenness (...) it is to get my full development, to see God face-to-face, to get the liberation of the Me.

57

To pray is not to ask. To pray is the breathing of the soul.

58

The prayer saved me the life. Without the prayer it would have been a long time without faith. She saved me of the despair. With the time my faith increased and the need to pray became more irresistible... my peace many times cause envies. She comes me from the prayer. I am a prayer man. As the body if it be not washed is dirty, like this the soul without prayer becomes impure.

59

The Fast is the most painful prayer and also the most sincere and compensatory.

60

The Fast is a potent weapon. Nor all can use her. Simple physical resistance doesn't mean aptitude for fast. The Fast doesn't have sense absolutely without faith in God.

61

For me anything more purifier and restorative that a fast.

62

My opponents will be forced to recognize that I am right. The truth will triumph. . . Up to now all my fasts were wonderful: I don't say in sense material, but for that that happens inside of me. It is a celestial peace.

63

Fast to purify himself and the others is an old rule that will last while the man believes in God.

64

I have deep faith in the method of private and public fast. . . To suffer even until the death, and, therefore same meantime a perpetual fast, and the extreme weapon of the satyagrahi. It is the last duty that we can accomplish. The Fast is my being's part, as it happens, in adult or smaller scale, with all the ones that sought the truth. I am making an ahimsa experience in vast climbs, an experience maybe until today ignored by the history.

65

Who wants to take a pure life should be always ready for the sacrifice.

66

The duty of the sacrifice doesn't force us to abandon the world and to leave to a forest, but to be always ready to sacrifice us for the other ones.

67

Who won the fear of the death won all the other fears.

68

The praises of the world don't please me; on the contrary, a lot of times sadden me.

69

When I hear to scream Mahatma Gandhi Ki jai, each sound of this sentence passes over me the heart as if it was an arrow. If he/she thought, although for only one instant, that such screams can deserve the swaraj; he/she would get to accept my suffering. But when I verify that the people waste time and they spend energies in vain acclamations, and they pass to the long when it is work, it would like that, instead of they scream my name, they lit me a funereal pyre, in the which I could arise to turn off once for all the fire that the heart burns.

70

A civilization is judged by the treatment that releases to the minorities.

71

I know for experience that the chastity is easy for who is gentleman of himself.

72

The brahmacharya is the control of the senses in the thought, in the words, and in the action. . . The one that aspirates him won't never stop having conscience of their lacks, he/she won't never stop pursuing the passions that they are nested still in the dark angles of his/her heart, and it will struggle without truce for the total liberation.

73

The brahmacharya, as all the other rules, should be observed in the thoughts, in the words and in the actions. We read in Gita and the experience confirm-knot-lo everyday that who dominates the own body, but it feeds bad thoughts does a vain effort. When the spirit is dispersed, the whole body, sooner or later, follows him/it in the perdition.

74

Per times he/she thinks her that and very difficult, or almost impossible to conserve chastity. The reason of this false opinion and that frequently, the word chastity is understood in too limited sense.

He/she thinks her that the chastity is the domain of the animalistic passions. This chastity idea is incomplete and false.

75

Alive for the liberation of the Indian and he/she would die for her, because and part of the truth.

Only a free India can adore true God. I work for the liberation of India because my Swadeshi teaches me that, having been born and inherited his/her culture, I am more capable to serve to India and her has priority of rights to my services. But my patriotism is not exclusive; he/she doesn't have for goal just not to do badly to anybody, but to do well to all in the true sense of the word. The liberation of India, like me conceives her, it cannot never constitute threat for the world.

76

Do I possess the no-violence of the courageous? Only the death will say. If they kill me and me with a prayer in the lips for my murderer and with the thought in God, aware of his/her presence he/she lives in the shrine of my heart, then, and only then, it can be said that I possess the no-violence of the courageous.

77

I don't want to die for the progressive stoppage of my universities, horn a due man. My murderer's candy could put an end to my life. He/she welcome with happiness.

78

The rule of gold consists in we be friends of the world and in we consider as a the whole human family. Who does distinction among the faithful of the own religion and the ones of other, diseducate the members of his/her religion and he/she makes way for the abandonment, the non-religion.

79

A man's force and of a people it is in the no-violence. Try.

Xamanismo: Each attitude your  rank in practical, is an action that results in reactions
that it is never extinguished. What you it makes echoes in the eternity.
